Hi Marshall and Gary, you seem very up to date on all the available tools. Here's a resource I created on wikipedia that you might be interested in viewing or editing yourself.

Hi Susan,

There are indeed a lot of free tools out there. Our general opinion is "you get what you pay for". We personally don't use free tools when it comes to SEO, keyword research or PPC. These aspects of both our business and our client's businesses are too important to rest with sub standard or limited feature trial versions. The recommendation to use free tools that we make are often a dipping your toe in the water type of approach or an entry point or introduction to various types of tools with the view of evaluating them and eventually deciding which professional tool will be right for you.... do your training on the free stuff so to speak.

We do however use a lot of other free tools that cater for the less critical aspects of an online business. If often amazes me that when it comes to the internet, everyone wants to use free tools or expects everything to be free. When was the last time you used a free point of sale software in your retail business or a free tracking software to run your logistics operation. No one in their right mind would, so why do it with your internet business?

As for PPC tools, we've tried plenty, PPC Webspy, PPC Bully, Google Cash Detective ispionage, KeyCompete, Keyword Spy and Spyfu. In short they all have their good and bad points depending on the features you are looking for and the market you are in.

The clear winner for us is Keyword Spy. Why? Most of our clients are focused on markets based in Australia. So far Keyword Spy is the only tool that gives us accurate data for the Australian market. If you are wanting to focus on the UK or the US markets then ispionage, KeyCompete and Spyfu are all much the same.

If you are on a budget then PPC Webspy will do a basic job. If you can afford several thousand dollars up front then PPC Bully and Google Cash detective are worth a look. Our way of thinking is to take a out a monthly subscription with Keyword Spy and be done with it - you also get a very useful keyword tool into the bargain.

Good luck

Nice article.

There are a lot of free tools especially on the PPC side that claim to help businesses achieve ppc success.

Any thoughts on such tools like, ispionage.com and spyfu?
